Shelf-ready packaging is a supply-chain decision disguised as a packaging design. Done well, an SRP case protects product in transit, opens cleanly on the retail shelf without a knife, presents the brand at the point of sale, and disappears from the stockroom in seconds. Done badly, it either spills product on the floor when the top is removed or needs so much store labour that staff abandon it.
One Plus Display produces shelf-ready packaging (SRP) and custom retail boxes alongside its display range, using the same structural and print expertise. This page covers SRP formats, the openability rules that make a case retail-ready, and how we design custom boxes and gift packaging for premium launches.
What actually makes packaging “shelf-ready”
SRP is defined by behaviour, not by decoration. A case is shelf-ready when a store associate can remove the lid, place the tray and be sure the product will not collapse. The practical requirements are: a clean, predictable tear line; a tray that retains its shape once the top is gone; a footprint that matches the planogram; and printed branding that faces the shopper. If any one of these fails, the case becomes a stockroom problem.
- Full SRP cases. Tear-down front or top, with a reinforced tray and a shelf-ready face.
- PDQ converters. A transit box that converts into a counter or shelf display at store level.
- Gravity-feed boxes. Product slides forward automatically, keeping the front facing full.
- Rigid gift and premium boxes. Magnetic, telescopic or ribbon-tie boxes with die-cut inserts for unboxing-led launches.
- Hooked SRP. A shelf box with a euro-hole or hooks for peg or rail placement.
Design rules we apply
Good SRP is boring by design. We keep the tear graphics unambiguous with a single printed tongue and a clear “open here” cue. We set the perforation so it breaks along the board’s structure rather than across it, which prevents ragged edges. We add a return lip or a rolled edge to the tray so the opening does not flare when product is removed. And we size the tray to the shelf depth plus a small ergonomic allowance, because a case that fits the shelf but not a hand will not sell product.
| Specification | Range we build to |
|---|---|
| Board | B/EB-flute corrugated with 350 gsm liner; rigid board for gift boxes |
| Printing | 4C CMYK offset litho lamination; digital for short runs; foil and spot UV on rigid boxes |
| Finishes | Matt/gloss lamination, soft-touch, foil stamping, embossing, die-cut inserts |
| Openability | Hand-tear perforation, tear strip, or a lift-off lid; no knife required |
| Compliance | Designed to ISTA transit expectations and retailer planogram footprints |
| MOQ / lead time | 100 pcs; sample 1–3 days, bulk 10–15 days |
From transit box to display in one motion
The most efficient SRP removes a step rather than adding one. A convertible box arrives as transit packaging and, after a single tear, leaves a finished display tray with a branded header. We use this approach for confectionery, tea and personal-care launches because it eliminates the separate display from the shipment entirely — one SKU to order, one unit to place, one piece of packaging to recycle.
Premium finishing without a premium substrate
High-end packaging does not require a high-end material. We achieve a luxury feel on corrugated board with PVC edge banding that hides the raw flute, soft-touch lamination, spot UV on the logo and a die-cut insert that holds the product immovably. This is the same technique behind our “wood-like” display finishes, and it lets a gourmet or skincare brand sit next to rigid-box competitors at a fraction of the cost.

Formats to start from
- SRP box with hooks — shelf or rail placement in one pack.
- Tea shelf-ready box — small-footprint retail presentation.
- Gravity-feed snack box — self-facing throughout the sell-down.
- Rigid gift box with die-cut insert — premium unboxing for oil and spirits.
SRP & custom box FAQ
What is the difference between SRP and a normal shipping case?
SRP is designed to become the shelf presentation; a shipping case is only for transport. SRP adds a controlled tear line, a stable tray and shopper-facing print.
How do I know the case will open cleanly?
We test the perforation on the production board and send a physical sample. Tear behaviour changes with board grade and grain direction, so it must be verified on the real material, not a proof.
Can SRP be used for e-commerce shipping?
Yes, with a stronger board and a sealed outer. Some clients use a single case for both e-commerce transit and a retail conversion, which reduces SKUs but raises the board spec.
Do you print variable data such as batch or QR codes?
Digital printing supports variable data and short runs; litho handles high volume economically. We can combine both for a run with a variable panel.
What is the minimum quantity for a rigid gift box?
Rigid boxes carry higher tooling and hand-assembly, so the practical MOQ is 500–1000 pcs depending on complexity and insert design.
