Most retail displays are designed for a climate-controlled aisle. PVC display stands are designed for the places that break cardboard: garden centres, forecourts, wet aisles, outdoor promotions and any location where the floor is hosed down rather than mopped. Printed PVC — corrugated plastic or foam board — keeps its graphics, does not wick water, and can be wiped clean, which makes it the sensible substrate whenever a display has to survive more than one promotion cycle.

Material options and what each is for
- Corrugated plastic (hollow PVC board). The workhorse: light, rigid, waterproof, printable, and available in 3–10 mm. Ideal for floor racks, peg racks and outdoor signage.
- Rigid PVC foam board. Heavier and smoother, with a painted edge. Suits premium indoor signage and premium display panels.
- PVC with metal fixings. Where hooks, casters or rails carry load, we combine a PVC face with a metal or wood frame so the fittings do not pull through.
The choice is usually driven by two questions: does the unit get wet, and does it get reused? If the answer to either is yes, PVC is the default.
Why PVC survives where paper fails
Corrugated paper has three vulnerabilities in a wet or outdoor setting: the liner wicks water and delaminates, the print cockles and fades, and the structure loses stiffness once damp. PVC has none of these failure modes. Its closed-cell or hollow construction does not absorb water, UV flatbed printing bonds ink to the surface rather than sitting on a coated liner, and the material can be washed. The result is a display that can be packed away, stored and redeployed for a second or third season — which usually changes the commercial case entirely.

Designing for load and weather
PVC is stiff, but it is not infinitely stiff. A tall PVC floor rack loaded with long-handled items will bow at the middle unless the panel is braced or the base is tied to a frame. Outdoors, wind is the real load: a large PVC sign is a sail, so we either break the surface with cut-outs or provide a weighted base. Where product is hung from hooks, we double the panel or add a metal stiffener at the hook line, because a pulled hook tears PVC just as it tears board if the material around it is thin.
Project reference: an umbrella rack for a wet entrance
A retail client needed a floor display for umbrellas and parasols that would sit near an entrance where the floor is always wet. A cardboard rack would have failed within a week. We built a double-layer PVC pegboard that secures both the tip and the handle of each long-handled item, so the umbrellas stay organised and upright even in high traffic, with UV-printed graphics that survive repeated cleaning. The same rack also separated cane handles without tangling — a detail that only became obvious once we tested with real product.

PVC display FAQ
Is PVC recyclable?
Corrugated plastic is a synthetic material and is generally not accepted in kerbside paper recycling. The environmental case for PVC is reuse: a rack that runs three seasons beats three cardboard racks that are discarded after one. Where a short-life program is the priority, cardboard remains the lower-impact choice.
Can PVC be printed in full colour?
Yes. UV flatbed printing gives high-resolution, water-resistant full-colour graphics bonded to the surface, including gradients and photographic images.
Will PVC fade in sunlight?
UV inks resist fading far better than paper-based print, and we can specify UV-stable inks for long outdoor campaigns. Extended direct summer sun will still gradually soften solids, so we recommend a laminated face for multi-season outdoor use.
How thick should the PVC be?
3–5 mm is enough for signage and light racks; 5–10 mm for structural panels, hook lines and any unit carrying load. We will size it to the load and span rather than quoting a single thickness.
Does PVC cost more than cardboard?
Per unit, yes — typically two to four times a comparable corrugated display. Per month of service life, it is often cheaper, which is the comparison that matters for permanent or outdoor fixtures.
