Project Background: Premium Snacks Need Premium Displays
For high-end snack brands, perception is everything. Our client, a manufacturer of Gourmet Rice Crackers, wanted to launch a new line in upscale grocery stores. Their packaging was matte-finished and expensive looking, but they faced a dilemma with their retail fixtures.
They needed a POP Display that was cost-effective and easy to ship (like cardboard) but didn’t look cheap. Standard cardboard displays often suffer from “rough edges,” where the raw corrugated flutes are visible, clashing with premium branding.
Figure 1: The wide, low-profile design ensures stability, while the white plastic edging gives it a clean, finished look.
The Challenge: The “Raw Edge” Problem
The client’s product boxes are wide and flat, requiring a “Short and Stout” (Low-Profile, Wide-Base) display structure to hold sufficient stock without blocking sightlines in the store.
However, cutting cardboard into this specific curved side shape exposes the internal “flutes” (the wavy paper inside the cardboard). The client felt these exposed brown edges looked messy and would fray easily after weeks of shopping cart bumps, making the display look worn out quickly.
Our Solution: PVC Edge Banding Technology
To bridge the gap between “Cardboard Cost” and “Permanent Fixture Aesthetics,” One Plus Display implemented a specialized finishing technique.
1. Plastic (PVC) Edge Banding
Instead of leaving the side panel edges raw, we applied a custom White U-Channel PVC Trim along the exposed cross-sections. This technique serves two critical purposes:
- Aesthetic Upgrade: It completely hides the raw corrugated flutes, creating a smooth, solid outline that mimics the look of wood or plastic fixtures.
- Durability: The plastic trim acts as a bumper, protecting the cardboard edges from peeling or damage during restocking and cleaning.
Figure 2: The white edge trim provides a crisp contrast against the red branding and protects the edges from wear and tear.
2. The “Short & Stout” Architecture
We designed a 3-tier structure with a wider footprint and lower center of gravity. This “Dumpy Bin” style is incredibly stable and ideal for heavy, bulkier snack boxes. It allows for high inventory capacity (stocking 30+ boxes) while keeping the product at an accessible “grab height” for shoppers.
The Result: High-End Aesthetics at Cardboard Costs
The client was thrilled with the hybrid look. The displays were placed in 500 premium retail outlets.
- Perceived Value: Shoppers perceived the brand as higher quality due to the clean, defect-free presentation of the display.
- Extended Lifespan: Thanks to the plastic edge protection, these displays lasted 2x longer in-store than standard cardboard units, as the edges did not fray or get soggy from floor moisture.
